What is Physiotherapy?
A Physiotherapist helps restore movement and function to the body. As well as providing treatment, physiotherapists help people to prevent further pain or injury and maintin fitness.
How Does Physiotherapy Work?
Physiotherapy is a drug-free therapy employing a range of techniques, including joint mobilisation and manipulation, exercises and stretches, massage, ice treatments, heat packs, ultra sound, airway clearance techniques and breathing exercises.
A referral from a medical practitioner is not generally required to visit a physiotherapist and many private health funds offer rebates for visits. Medicare rebates may also be available for certain conditions, however in those cases a referral from a medical practitioner will generally be required.
How Physiotherapy Can Help Back Pain
Physiotherapists identify a number of factors as potentially causing back pain, including injury, postural stress, muscle strains, ligament strains, disc problems, sciatica, arthritis and muscle weakness. Depending on the cause of the back pain, physiotherapists treat those problems with a range of techniques, including advice and early activity programmes (physiotherapists see movement as being an important treatment for back pain), manipulative physiotherapy, specific stabilization exercises, general exercises and stretches, postural advice and ergonomic advice.
