What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a heath care system focusing on the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. The principal underlying Chiropractic is that the key to health is the nervous system with the spine at its centre. If the spine is adjusted properly, optimum movement can continue and a person will maintain better health.
Generally, Chiropractors address what they describe as "subluxations"— disturbances to the spinal bones causing a loss of motion or loss of normal position, leading to impairment to the nervous system or nerve irritation.
How Does Chiropractic Work?
Chiropractors generally start by examining the spine and taking a relevant case history to help determine any accidents, injuries or tensions that are interfering with normal function. Sometimes the Chiropractor will order an X-ray to help determine this. A common form of Chiropractic treatment is a spinal manipulation or adjustment. This treatment is usually done by hand with manipulation of a spinal joint helping to increase or "unlock" the joint's range of motion. This is usually performed on a Chiropractic table and patients may need to be undressed.
Chiropractors also use additional tools to promote healing including rehabilitative exercise, nutritional programmes and suggested lifestyle modifications.
The length and frequency of treatment varies depending on the practitioner and the severity of the problem presented.
