What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture originated in China and is a treatment that can be traced back thousands of years. The general theory of traditional acupuncture is based on patterns of energy flow through the body that are essential for health. This energy is referred to as Qi or Chi and sometimes Xue (blood).  Disruptions of this flow are believed to be responsible for pain and disease. Acupuncture works to correct imbalances of flow, helping to restore health.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Broadly, acupuncture involves stimulation of points on the body by a variety of techniques. This stimulation is typically performed with very thin needles that cause gentle sensations. Each needle is inserted into points along specific body pathways or “meridians”.

How Acupuncture Helps Back Pain

According to traditional acupuncture, pain results from blocked energy along meridians of the body, which are unblocked when acupuncture needles are inserted.

Modern scientific explanations have also been provided for the back pain relief that acupuncture has been observed to give. These include that acupuncture releases helpful neurochemicals and hormones, produces signals that calm the sympathetic nervous system and releases natural opioids that provide pain relief.

Conditions treated by Acupuncture include:

  • lower back pain
  • upper back pain
  • neck pain
  • shoulder pain
  • back and neck stiffness
  • sciatica
  • sprains and strains
  • stress/anxiety.
